Dent Safeco founded Safeco in Seattle, Washington as the General Insurance Company of America, a property and casualty insurer. Safeco uses this name on some of its insurance products. Selective Auto and Fire Ensurance Company of America or SAFECO was founded by General Insurance Company of America, thirty years later. General Insurance was first headquartered in downtown Seattle at the corner of University Street and Fourth Avenue.
