The eldest of four children Luciano Benetton was a 30-year-old salesman in Treviso in 1965. He saw a market for colourful clothes. In order to buy his first second-hand knitting machine, he sold his younger brother’s bicycle. In local stores in the Veneto region, his first small collection of sweaters received a positive response, after that he asked his sister and two younger brothers, Gilberto and Carlo, to join him. The Benettons opened their first store in Belluno in 1966 and after three years in Paris, with Luciano as chairman, his brother Gilberto in charge of administration, their younger brother Carlo running production, and Giuliana as a chief designer.

In the United States, Benetton is known for producing a long-running series of controversial, sometimes insulting, advertisements that have caused a number of media critics to indict the company of intentionally creating controversy in order to sell its goods. Benetton is a fashion company. Products like women’s wear, men’s wear, children’s wear, undergarments, toiletries, perfumes, and items for the home such as kitchen accessories and baby products are produce by the company. Casual clothing is marketed as the “United Colors of Benetton“. “Sisley” division and “Playlife” leisurewear are also there in the company. Every year, the Group produces more than 150 million garments. Benetton has more than 9000 employees in their company. The company also does sponsorship of a number of sports and for the provocative and original “United Colors” publicity campaign. The latter originated when photographer Oliviero Toscani was given carte blanche by the Benetton management. Ads entitled “United Colors of Benetton,” were made under Toscani’s direction that contained striking images unrelated to any actual products being sold by the company.

Benetton has faced censured from Mapuche organizations, including Mapuche International Link, over its purchase of traditional Mapuche lands in Patagonia. In 2002, the Curiñanco-Nahuelquir family was ejected from their land following Benetton’s claim to it, but in 2007 the land was restored. Currently, PETA is running a boycott campaign against Benetton because they use Australian wool in their clothing. This is because of the controversy in the process of crutching sheep.
