Www.hmrc.gov.uk – Income Tax Rates and allowances 2010-2011
Here the information is mentioned about Income Tax Rates and allowances 2010-2011 which is provided at website www.hmrc.gov.uk. HMRC stands for Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs. It is a non-ministerial department of the British Government and mainly responsible for the collection of taxes and the payment of some forms of state support. On the official website, www.hmrc.gov.uk, they ensure that the correct tax is paid at the right time, whether this relates to payment of taxes received by the department or entitlement to benefits paid.
Income Tax Rates and allowances for the year 2008-09, 2009-10 and 2010-2011:
| Income Tax Allowances | 2008-09 | 2009-10 | 2010-11 |
| Personal Allowance (1) | £6,035 | £6,475 | £6,475 |
| Income limit for Personal Allowance | Not applicable | Not applicable | £100,000 |
| Personal Allowance for people aged 65-74 (1)(2) | £9,030 | £9,490 | £9,490 |
| Personal Allowance for people aged 75 and over (1)(2) | £9,180 | £9,640 | £9,640 |
| Married Couple’s Allowance (born before 6th April 1935 but aged under 75) (2)(3)(4) | £6,535 | Not applicable | Not applicable |
| Married Couple’s Allowance – aged 75 and over (2)(3) | £6,625 | £6,965 | £6,965 |
| Income limit for age-related Allowances | £21,800 | £22,900 | £22,900 |
| Minimum amount of Married Couple’s Allowance | £2,540 | £2,670 | £2,670 |
| Blind Person’s Allowance | £1,800 | £1,890 | £1,890 |
- Tax relief for the Married Couple’s Allowance is given at the rate of 10 per cent.
- From the 2010-11 tax year the Personal Allowance reduces where the income is above £100, 000 – by £1 for every £2 of income above the £100,000 limit. This reduction applies irrespective of age.
- These allowances reduce where the income is above the income limit – by £1 for every £2 of income above the limit. For the 2008-09 and 2009-10 tax years they will never be less than the basic Personal Allowance or minimum amount of Married Couple’s Allowance. However, from the 2010-11 tax year the Personal Allowance for people aged 65 to 74 and 75 and over can be reduced below the basic Personal Allowance where the income is above £100,000.
- In the 2009-10 tax year all Married Couple’s Allowance claimants in this category will become 75 at some point during the year and will therefore be entitled to the higher amount of the allowance – for those aged 75 and over.
Income Tax rates and taxable bands:
| 2008-09 | 2009-10 | 2010-11 | |
| Starting rate for savings: 10%* | £0-£2,320 | £0-£2,440 | £0-£2,440 |
| Basic rate: 20% | £0-£34,800 | £0-£37,400 | £0-£37,400 |
| Higher rate: 40% | Over £34,800 | Over £37,400 | £37,401-£150,000 |
| Additional rate: 50% | Not applicable | Not applicable | Over £150,000 |
- From 2008-09 there is a 10 per cent starting rate for savings income only. If your non-savings income is above this limit then the 10 per cent starting rate for savings will not apply.
- The rates available for dividends for the 2008-09 and 2009-10 tax years are the 10 per cent ordinary rate and the 32.5 per cent dividend upper rate. For the 2010-11 tax year, as well as these rates there is a new dividend additional rate of 42.5 per cent.

Have just received 2010 Coding Notice with regard to State Pension giving a tax code of K46. Am informed that this will be forwarded to Teachers Pensions to be used when they pay me my other pension. What does this code mean? My personal allowance of £7161 bears no relation to published allowances with no explanation as to how it has been worked out. I am 78 years of age and married. Can you help? Many thanks.

I am 66 year old and retiring on 31st March 2010. I have just received my tax code which is 99L does this mean I pay more or less tax,?
Also I have been told I will not receive any payment for 4 months after I leave as the finance dept. is three months behind with their paper work.I have been given reassurance that I will receive my monthly pension back pay along with my lump sum. Will this mean I will have to pay more income tax because it will come as a lump sum?
Thanks for your help

I will be 75 in May will I get the extra allowance this year?
When will I receive a coding notice?
March 13th, 2010 at 5:32 pm
I am given a notice of BR (Basic Rate) w.e.f. 6 April 2010, perhaps because alongwith my income from my main job as a Security Officer I went to teach as a Supply Teacher for some days through an agency. If I leave occasional teaching job, which doesn’t add much to my income, will my tax come down from BR? I mean shall I be given the present code and not the Basic Rate code?
March 13th, 2010 at 5:36 pm
Labour Government is squeezing the honest and hard working people by levying more tax and serving facilities who do not work and live on support under one or the other pretext…how justified is this practice?

Did the 2010/2011 budget say that the first £10.000 of income for a pensioner aged 75 and over was tax free ? or am I dreaming.
March 26th, 2010 at 6:39 pm
Please help ! Can not get through on the ‘phones. My tax code has arrived as usual from the Leeds office. It appears to be correct. But I have also, on the same day, received a fresh coding notification from the Salford office saying that a small annuity I have will be taxed at 20%. Bur it is already included in the
tax coding from Leeds, as it has been for the last15 years. Why has this happened now ? And I am sure that I don’t have to pay tax twice. Please sort out and ammend and notify me of your actions.
March 26th, 2010 at 9:11 pm

I received my tax code as BR (20%) When i finally got through to the 0845 number they said it was because I had two jobs!
I HAVEN’T.
I was previously unemployed but got a job (£92.80/week) five months ago!!! They have sent me a new code 340T

I have written and phoned several times: My Tax code for 2010-11 as dropped from 2009-10 due to the married couples allowance in 2009-2010 of 6965 being reduce to 3453 . I would like to know he reason for this.
March 31st, 2010 at 9:40 pm
i have been given br as new tax code. have 2 jobs. does this mean it is not worthwhile to do extra job as i will now be penalised with 20% tax. like everyone else i found it impossible to get anyone to answer phone. is there anyone actually there??????????
April 1st, 2010 at 3:23 am
I have checked my PAYE coding notice for 2010-2011. Please tell me why my married couples allowance has been reduced from £6965.00 to £3483.00,as this reduces my coding from 967T to 606T. According to the notes on this Website it appears that you assume my Income will be £106,965.00. (How I wish). I too heard the budget say that my Tax free allowance would be £10,000.
ZE 35 66 72 C refers. (Not for publication)
April 1st, 2010 at 7:43 pm
I have received my new coding for 2010 – 2011 and wonder what will happen when I become 65 in September as I understand that my allowances will be more than my government pension and my private pension. When will I stop paying income tax. One of my private pensions was paid in advance for this current year it was paid in February 10 and I was taxed on it as normal what happens about this.
April 1st, 2010 at 8:05 pm
I have been reading the email that people have sent in and noticed the problems about the telephone service. I my self was trying to get through the other week, 4 during the day and 3 between 6 and 8, with no luck then 8am the next day finely got through. I was disgusted with this service. I am now not looking forward to my phone bill. And how do you justify using a 08 number’s like me and 1000 of other tax payers are on a low income. PS I bet you wont give me a tax refund on this ?, it a ripped off britain.
April 5th, 2010 at 12:08 am
Just received Paye coding for 2010-11. Code is BR. Completely different to previous code types. My salary has not changed. Why has my code changed which means paying lot more tax
April 6th, 2010 at 1:53 pm
I have not received a new tax code for 2010/11 and I was 65 on 29/3/2010. Have tried constantly for days to speak to my local office but lines are always busy and told to ring back later. Is there any time when lines not busy!

April 7th, 2010 at 7:56 pm
need to know why im paying tax on a pension i am not recieving yet
April 7th, 2010 at 11:09 pm
New Coding Notice received. Increase in income does not appear to warrant lower tax code. Also advised underpayment for previous year had not been notified to me as stated in letter.
April 7th, 2010 at 11:16 pm
New code does not appear to agree with increase in income. Underpayment for last year not previously notified.
April 8th, 2010 at 6:39 pm
My husband has just been informed that he will be taxed £40.40 per month because he apparently, according to Inland Revenue, falls into the £22,000 bracket, I wish he did earn that much I would go on a world cruise.I too have tried phoning the Ghost Buster number, but perhaps they are too busy sorting out their own tax codes. It is a disgrace as there is no rhyme or reason to this as the only increase received is the meagre amount allowed to OAP’s from the 12th April or thereabouts. It is time they sorted out the Big Fat Cats and all those people who make illegal claims to which they are not entitled.
April 8th, 2010 at 7:13 pm
I have received a PAYE Coding Notice for the year 6 April 2010 to 5 April 2011. The Notice states that my personal allowance for the year is £8916. I am at a loss to understand why my personal is not £9490. Please clarify.
April 8th, 2010 at 10:00 pm
We are now entering a new tax year (2010/2011) and I have not received a code number. My NI number is HA602784B. In previous years I have receive the notice well before the start of the new FY. Is there a general delay? Having skipped through the comments on the web site I don’t hold out much hope of receiving an answer. The phone service is an unmitigated disaster. Our tax payments are presumably the funding source for this inefficiency.
April 8th, 2010 at 10:05 pm
Incidentally your clock is wrong. Isent my msgs at 1800 and 1803 and not 1000 and 1003.
April 12th, 2010 at 2:46 pm
Govt’s benefit system is totally injustice for the hardworkers who dont claim any benefit, working hardly and managing their families soly are being not at all supported by the Govt’s policy. Unfortunately those are cheating/abusing the benefit system are passing more enjoyable life. Those are in benefits are staying in decent council house, spending more time/money for shoping, spending more time for playing in the parks and outings, claiming as much as they can in all respect.
In fact incapacity should only to those who are genienly not able to walk/on wheel chairs thats all no one else.
April 20th, 2010 at 6:06 pm
I have just received my P60 from my pension fund and although my tax code number is the same, since going onto BR code I am paying more than a hundred pound more tax a month since last year, is this right? and can someone advise me please. I tried to use your 0845 number but was cut off please get it sorted.
April 24th, 2010 at 11:09 pm

My NI No is YH 42 15 12B and I have been sent a tax No of 130L for 2010-2011.
Today I received my Norfolk County Council Pension advice, and the tax taken on £865.37 (this includeds my pension increase for this financial year) is £151.20. This has left my net pension deleted by over £100.00 and therefore is compared to my previous tax taken for the past year which was around £65 per month!!!! Why has this happened? My circumstances have not changed, and my tax has always been paid at the rate requested by yourselves from both my pension, state pension, and the rate you apply to my p/time earnings.
Losing £100 + per month is going to cause me financial problems, as the reason I continue to work until I am 65yrs old (Health permitting) is that I need to offload financial committments before I have to retire completely.
Is £151.20 the amount of tax you intend to take every month, and if so, you MUST have made a serious miscalculation in the past,. WHY?!! Also, you have my name spelt wrongly — it is: Mrs Marion Ann Clements, please amend your records accordingly. Your earliest reply would be appreciated, as this tax coding is seriously going to cause me financial problems. Mrs Marion Clements

After being changed 4 times in recent months, my Code has been altered again to K4. I received £22 less in my May pension than in April. My circumstances have not changed in the past year. What is K4 and why the change.
I have tried to phone countless times and always get cut off after giving what I am asked for as “all our operators are busy”. The extra revenue for BT must be very welcome by them.

I have just received my P60 for my NHS pension. The tax code has been changed to BR, which means I’m paying £32 a mounth out of a small pension of £163. I’v tried 0845 300 3949 for days but I’m getting cut off. I already pay tax on my late husbands small private pension. That pension was increased by £10 and the tax went up by £5. I am 91 and never been on benefit and I dont want to start. Can you please sort this out? My PAYE ref 948/401. If this continues I will have to apply for benefit and at my age I really can’t handle the paperwork that has to be filled in.

My new tax code for the NHS Paymaster for 2010/2011 is 189P , which replaces 327P . Why , when all my NHS pensions remain the same as the previous years , has there been a loss of 138 points ( £ 1380+) ? The only change in my circumstances is the £124.40 pa increase in my state pension .
Like other correspondents I find the telephone a waste of time as the operators are always busy and one is unceremoniously cut-off !

1. I have been asked to inform you if my income for 2010/2011 will be more or less than £24302, I believe my taxable income will be £23820.
2. Could you please tell me why I have to complete a tax return each year as my only income is from my pensions which are all paid by HMG and open to your scrutiny!!!!.
3. If an error occurs on this reply could you ask your programmers to allow the text to be retained and recovered and only go back to the box to be amended, I have had to retype all of this text!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

I am not working as I had a stroke I get 3 small pensions 1 nhs pension on which I have never paid tax which I think is correct as it is small,2 other small pensions on which I have always paid tax at BR. I have rung tax ofice on several occasions and they agreed that I was paying too much for the last at least 2 years however nothing was ever done. I receive incapacity benefit as well. The tax codes I have received for this year show that I am now not on BR for the two small pensions and therefore will not be paying tax at all so am I due a refund for the last 2 years when I was paying BR tax and if so how do I claim it.

The telephones you have on your documents are as good as not being there because I very much prefer to be helped by a person I can see or hear. My tax code has changed and I noticed it so in my pay. All along I have had Tax code L, but now I have BR meaning I hold a second job which I do not. Please allocate me with my rightful code.

My Tax Code has been split between my earnings and an annuity. My annuity is £329 and I presumably am allowed to earn £689 on this income. This payment is paid yearly and does not go up or down. Why £689? I need some of this allowance for my earnings at Sainsburys as I am now paying tax. My tax code up to April 2010 was 522P which allowed me to earn approx £400 – 4 weekly before I was taxed. My current tax code is 446P on my earnings at Sainsburys and can only earn approx £340 – 4 weekly before being taxed.
Tax ref 663/S & 70/L1C. National Insurance Number will be supplied on request.
I have had the same problem as others trying to telephone, lines always busy try later.

I have experienced a hard time trying to contact you by phone. Its impossible to get someone to answer the phone. Anyway I have a huge problem. I am the only bread winner in my house hold comprising four persons. Wife does not work. One son is at college and the other is pursuing part time university work and can’t get a job. My outgoings on basic needs way exceed my income. Currently we are below datum line and surviving on overdrafts which I will never be able to repay. My tax code is BR & tax reference is 419/TZ92211. I do not know how you can help us?
