Tehri Dam

Tehri Dam is the second highest dam in Asia, sixth highest in the world and the highest dam in India. It is a multi-purpose earth-fill embankment dam. The dam is built on the Bhagirathi River in Uttarakhand, India. The Tehri Hydro Pump electric Power Plant and the Tehri Dam are a part of the Tehri hydroelectric Complex that includes 400 MW Koteshwar Dam downstream. It is the main dam of the Tehri Hydro Development Corporation Ltd (THDC). The dam is 575 metres in length (1,886 ft), base width 1,128 metres (3,701 ft) and crest width is about 20 metres (66 ft). It creates a reservoir of 2.6 cubic kilometers with 52 square kilometres (20 sq mi) as its surface area. The dam supplies irrigation to an area of 270,000 hectares, stabilization of irrigation to an area of 600,000 hectares (1,500,000 acres). Plus, it also supplies 270 million gallons of drinking water to the developed areas of Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. The installed hydrocapacity of the dam is 1,000 MW along with an added pumped storage hydroelectricity of 1,000 MW. The dam has been the object of protest by the environmental society and the local people because it is located in the area where once earthquake had occurred with a magnitude of 6.8.
