Rolex watches are one of the luxury watches which are famous for high quality, beauty and design. Rolex watch is a fashion statement and a status symbol. These days, Rolex watches are among the world’s most copied watches. Rolex creates about 650000 to 800000 watches every year but counterfeiters make 10 times more than that. Counterfeit watches are sold on city streets, over the internet or through newspaper advertisements for a high price to the shoppers who want a genuine Rolex watch.
They affect original Rolex watches market badly, which is a real threat for the company. Even if the fake watches looks similar to real one with same style and design but they cannot match the real Rolex watches in performance, functionality and accuracy. So it becomes very difficult to spot a fake Rolex. Identifying fake Rolex watches is possible by examining some of the signature features of the brand. Some simple tips are provided here, which will help you to differentiate between an authentic Rolex watches and a replica Rolex watches.
Tips to Differentiate Between Fake and Real Rolex Watches
Always check the weight of the watch as the real Rolex watch is heavier than fake. Authentic Rolex watches are made from stainless steel, solid gold or platinum while the fake are manufactured from light weight metal. Stainless steel or gold are heavy compared to base metal used in fake watches.
2. Sapphire Crystal
The face of the real Rolex watch is of laboratory-made synthetic sapphire crystal whereas the fake model has a glass or plastic (acrylic) crystal. Only, the models made after 1991 have this sapphire crystal. These sapphire crystals come with clear white appearance and can be scratched only with a diamond. Fake models are not scratch resistant and have milky white appearance.
3. Rolex Crown
All the real versions after 2004 sport a small laser-etched crown logo of the company at the 6 o’clock position on the crystal. This logo is not visible with naked eyes so you have to use a magnifying glass to view it. Fake Rolex watches also have a crown logo but it is crude and large, which you can spot clearly with the naked eye.
4. Date Window
In the real Rolex watches, the “Cyclops” or date magnification is attached to the crystal. It is found perfectly centered above the date aperture and magnifies the date display 2.5 times. In fake watches, Cyclops magnifies the date display only 1.5 times or lower and positioned incorrectly and misaligned.
5. Smooth Movement
Except the Rolex Oysterquartz, each and every genuine Rolex watches has smooth sweeping movement at around 28,800 revs per hour. The second hand ticks eight times per second. In fake watches, Swiss-made movement is used but the second hand’s ticking is not as smooth as an authentic Rolex.
Rolex watches are among the most high-quality watches so the quality is obvious in every detail. The lettering on the dial must be convex or rounded outward and evenly spaced. The letters also must be very crisp and clear without fuzzy edges. If the letters in the watch are not perfect, then it is fake. The edges in real Rolex watches are smooth, whereas the fake one has sharper edges.
7. The Model and Serial Number
You can also spot the real Rolex watches by their model and serial number on the side of the watch case. The model number is located on the 12 o’clock side and the serial number is engraved on the 6 o’clock side. In the fake watches, the model and serial number appear rough and the certification numbers are number combinations recurrence.
Authentic Rolex watches have a 3-D hologram sticker on the case back. This three-dimensional hologram features floating Rolex crown and reference number on it. The background pattern changes when you will see this hologram from different angles. Fake Rolex watches also have 3-D hologram sticker with Rolex pattern. When you see the hologram from different angles, the pattern does not change.
9. Illumination Markings
Real Rolex watches have illumination markings on the hands and hour markers. Once these illumination markings are charged with direct light they will glow in the dark for extended period of time. The fake versions do not glow for longer period of time like real one.
10. Case Backs
Checking the case back of the Rolex watches is another way to indentify fake watches. If they are clear back from which you can see the inner mechanism then it is fake. The clear case backs are of crystal, glass or plastic. Real Rolex watches don’t have clear case back except 2 very rare models.
