Haggis may available soon in US

Haggis is a non-veg food dish which contain sheep’s ‘pluck’ (heart, liver and lungs), minced with onion, oatmeal, suet, spices, salt, mixed with stock, and traditionally boiled in the animal’s stomach for approximately three hours. Since 1989, Haggis was banned by US authorities; because they feared its main components – minced sheep offal – could be dangerous. But after 21 years, it is assumed that Haggis will be available soon in US.

According to Larousse Gastronomique, “haggis has an excellent nutty texture and delicious savory flavor“. Since 1787, Haggis becomes a national dish of Scotland by Robert Burns’ poem Address to Haggis. Traditionally, it is served with “neeps & tatties” and “dram”. The ban was introduced in 1989 because of fears about the safety of British meat in wake of the BSE outbreak. But now, Haggis Dish is dubbed as the “great chieftain o’ the pudding race” can be ready to go back for the U.S., after the US Government announced plans to unwind legislation introduced on imported meats that has usually banned its sale.

Scottish environment secretary, Richard Lockhead said “I am greatly encouraged to hear that the U.S. authorities are planning a review of the unfair ban on haggis imports. It’s time for the U.S. authorities to deliver a Burns night boost and recognize that the Scottish haggis is outstanding quality produce.

For the last 21 years, Americans of Scottish descents have been forced to celebrate Burns’ night without a true haggis, much to their distress, but this year they are very happy as US authorities remove ban on the haggis. So this year they are celebrating burns night with Haggis, and they make their haggis with ground sheep’s heart and liver, mixed with Scottish oatmeal and black pepper. Every year burns night celebrates the birth of Scottish bard Robert Burns, who was born Jan. 25, 1759. The latest sales figures suggest that Haggis is more popular now than ever. Approximately £ 9m worth was sold in the UK alone last year, the 250th anniversary of Burns’ birth, up by 19% on 2008.
